New York

Known as the ‘Big Apple’ and the ‘city that never sleeps,’ New York City is one of the world’s most iconic destinations.

In the 17th century, the original city – known as New Amsterdam – was a Dutch colony, before being captured by the British in 1664 and renamed New York. The city’s importance as a gateway to the New World has grown ever since and one of New York’s must-see highlights is the Statue of Liberty, which has welcomed people to America since 1886. Nowadays New York is one of the most multicultural and dynamic cities in North America.

With multiple direct flights a day from all the UK’s major airports, New York is easy to get to. And there’s no better way to feel like a local than to stay in an apartment or villa, and see New York City like a real New Yorker.

Split into five boroughs (Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx and Staten Island) New York offers plenty to do, whatever your interests. Manhattan Island is split into districts – the Upper East Side and Upper West Side flank Central Park. Harlem is to the north of the park, while Hell’s Kitchen, Midtown, Greenwich Village, Soho and Tribeca are just some of the famous areas to the south. Battery Park, right on Manhattan’s southern tip, is great for views of the Statue of Liberty and is where you catch the ferry out to Liberty Island and Ellis Island where millions of immigrants first arrived in the USA.

For classic experiences, wander around Central Park, take in the view from the Empire State Building, or bask in the glow from Times Square. Find the glamour of the silver screen while searching out film and TV locations and keep your cool while keeping an eye out for celebrities. Go shopping on the world famous 5th Avenue with its plethora of designer shops, browse in famous department stores like Macy’s on W34th Street and Bloomingdale’s on 3rd Avenue. At Christmas time, don’t miss the chance to go ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre – it’s an iconic New York experience for a very good reason!

For something a little different, don’t miss the High Line – a 1.45-mile-long park built on an elevated section of a disused New York Central Railroad on Manhattan – or venture outside NYC itself to explore Long Island and the wider New York State area. It’s all so good, it’s no wonder they named it twice.

DINING, BARS AND NIGHTLIFE

New York is famous for its 24 hour culture, and there’s a plethora of restaurants, bars, and nightspots to explore – with new places popping up each month.
